File an overdue CT600 online

Taxley files an overdue CT600 online: you prepare the return, pay one fee and send it to HMRC with the company's Government Gateway login, the same day if the figures are ready. It doesn't file accounting periods that started before 1 April 2020, or for companies in liquidation or administration.

Preparing and previewing is free. You pay one fee per return, only when you choose to file.

Which overdue returns can't Taxley file?

A late return files the same way as one on time, with the same limits.

  • Older periods. Accounting periods that started before 1 April 2020.
  • Some companies. Companies in liquidation or administration, non-resident companies, and medium-sized or audited companies.
  • Some first accounts. A company's first accounts must start on the date of incorporation. The accounts can start before the return does, so set them to start on that date before you pay. If they start later, Taxley files the CT600 only and you file the first accounts at Companies House yourself.
  • Accounts Companies House already has. If the accounts for that year are already on the register and weren't filed through Taxley, Taxley files the CT600 only.
  • Penalties. Taxley doesn't pay, appeal or remove HMRC or Companies House penalties, and it doesn't pay the company's Corporation Tax.
  • Advice. Taxley is software from Taxley UK LLP, not an accountant or tax agent. The directors stay responsible for the figures.

How do you file an overdue CT600 with Taxley?

The steps are the same as for a return filed on time. HMRC charges a penalty once a return is late, and more the later it is (GOV.UK: Company Tax Returns, penalties for late filing), so filing as soon as you can limits what builds up.

  1. Start the return. Find the company on the Companies House register and choose the period that's overdue.
  2. Enter the figures. Income, expenses and the balance sheet for that period. A dormant company files a nil return.
  3. Check what Taxley builds. The CT600, the tax computation and the accounts, before you pay.
  4. Pay and file. Pay the one fee and send the return to HMRC with the company's own Government Gateway login. You need the company's UTR.
  5. File the accounts. Once the return is paid and finished, Taxley files that year's accounts at Companies House, which charges its own penalty for late accounts.

Several years behind? File the oldest first. Once a return is filed, "Prepare next year's return" starts the next one with last year's closing balance sheet and unused losses. The free Corporation Tax late filing penalty calculator shows what each late year can cost.

What does it cost to file an overdue CT600 with Taxley?

The same fee as a return filed on time: £49.95 with micro-entity accounts, £129 with small-company accounts, or £14.95 for a dormant company's nil return. Each year's return is paid for separately, and the fee covers filing that year's accounts at Companies House. There's no late fee from Taxley and no subscription. Every plan is on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I file a late company tax return online today?

Yes, once the figures are ready. Prepare the return in Taxley, check it, pay the fee and send it to HMRC with the company's Government Gateway login. HMRC then replies with an acceptance or a rejection.

Will filing now stop the penalties?

Penalties already charged stay, and HMRC's penalties grow the later a return is, so filing sooner keeps them from growing. The late filing penalty calculator shows how they build up. Taxley doesn't appeal penalties for you.

I have several overdue returns. Which should I file first?

Usually the oldest, because losses and the balance sheet carry from one year into the next. Taxley files one return at a time. It can't file accounting periods that started before 1 April 2020.

Do I also have to file late accounts at Companies House?

Usually, yes: the accounts deadline is separate and Companies House charges its own penalty. Taxley files the accounts there once the return is paid and finished, unless Companies House already has them.
